It has been brought to my attention that a post was flagged and removed from Facebook for a picture of a freshly killed and dressed deer that was hanging at a deer camp in Ohio. Apparently, this post had offended someone and to said “offended” as well as any others who claim offense by the legal hunting of deer, I say this:
Not a single one of us (yourself included) would be here today if not for the animals and the meat they provided to ALL of our ancestors. No matter the race, religion or location, people once actually had to hunt for their food. Perhaps a night or two in the cold with no factory-made blanket or a few months spent struggling to find nourishment, would clarify what I am saying.
Unfortunately, steaks don’t grow in the cooler at your local supermarket and burgers don’t magically appear at your favorite fast food joint. They come from animals that are killed, skinned, and processed. Perhaps you find your fast food burger less offensive with their methods of mass slaughter, but for me, there is absolutely nothing to be offended about when a man kills a deer to feed his family. Perhaps he should be offended that you would rather see his children go hungry.
If you don't agree, then go make a salad and try to figure out what people used to eat when there salads and vegetables were covered in snow. If you are offended or upset that people live and sustain themselves naturally, then perhaps you should take even greater offense of your ancestors for providing for you.
Do I eat venison? You can bet your electrically heated rump that I do, and will continue to. It is a family tradition that goes back to the dawn of our species, which by the way would include your own. It is also a tradition that I look forward to sharing with my daughters. Yes, I look forward to the day my daughters shoot their first deer, one of which already has and I am very proud. I also stand by my God-Given right to feed my family and eat the meat that has been provided to us as such. If you care to challenge that statement, read your bible first.
Do we really live within a society that finds sex and violence on TV more appropriate for the children watching it, than a steak the old-fashioned way? Are we truly so dependent on fast food and factories, that we can no longer handle the natural way of life? I understand the cultures of vegetarianism and veganism and although I cannot afford that luxury, nor would I choose to, I have absolutely no problem with a decision not to kill when killing is not necessary. In many cases, it no longer is. We should all be thankful that civilization has progressed enough to allow such choices, keep in mind that we ourselves would have once been on the menu in many civilizations.
I will stand by my right to hunt. I do have the right to feed my family and yes, you have the right to be offended. I share that right as well and I too am offended in that you take offense. Now that we are even, can I eat my steak?
